Design & Develop a Custom WordPress Theme & Multisite Network for The Falkland Islands Government
The Falkland Islands Government required a robust, flexible digital platform capable of supporting multiple departments and public-facing services under one cohesive system.
They needed a fully custom WordPress solution that moved away from restrictive outdated Joomla framework and instead delivered a tailored WordPress user experience, strong accessibility foundations, and long-term scalability. A key requirement was the implementation of a WordPress Multisite network to manage multiple departmental websites centrally while maintaining consistency, governance, and editorial control.
Our role was to design and develop a custom WordPress theme and configure a Multisite architecture that would support current needs and future growth.
Challenges & Objectives
Before the rebuild, the Falkland Islands Government was operating on an outdated Joomla framework, which made routine content updates difficult and time-consuming. With these limitations led to increasing complexity in managing multiple departmental sites, inconsistent design and content structures, and an inefficient content publishing workflow.
The project objectives were to replace the legacy Joomla setup with a fully custom WordPress theme aligned with the Falkland Islands Government’s branding, accessibility, and content requirements, while implementing a WordPress Multisite network to centralise management. The new platform needed to significantly improve content editing through Gutenberg and Advanced Custom Fields, while delivering strong performance, responsive design, and SEO-ready foundations across all sites.
Our approach
Custom WordPress Theme Development
We designed and built a custom WordPress theme from the ground up. Every template, layout, and component was custom-developed to meet the requirements of a government organisation, with a strong focus on clarity, usability, and accessibility. Custom Gutenberg and ACF blocks allowed editors to manage content easily while maintaining visual consistency across the site.
WordPress Multisite Network Setup
A WordPress Multisite network was implemented to allow multiple departments and services to operate individual websites under one central system. This provided unified administration, shared themes and plugins, and simplified updates — while still allowing each site to maintain its own content and structure.
Performance, Accessibility & SEO
The platform was optimised for performance and accessibility from the outset. Clean, efficient code, responsive layouts, and SEO-friendly structures ensured fast load times, strong search visibility, and a reliable experience across devices and connection speeds.
Training & Documentation
